The in-depth story of Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton-John shot to fame in the United States with her role as Sandy in the 1978 cult film Grease.

She was a full-fledged recording artist prior to her time on the set of Grease. Olivia has had a rather normal person life for a woman who has been in the spotlight for so long. Now in her late 60s, the dramatic part of her life had more to do with her health than her personal choices. She fought her way to victory over breast cancer in the early 90s, and has been cancer free for many years. Sadly, this year, her cancer has returned and has also spread.

Olivia has been married twice in her life, once to co-star and fellow actor Matt Lattanzi and now to John Easterling. She has one daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi, whom she had with her first husband. Chloe is now getting her own press due to her acting, singing, and personal plastic surgery choices. Being the child of someone as talented and known as Olivia Newton-John cannot be easy, and Chloe seems to agree with our assessment. Olivia and Chloe are very close and are there fore each other no matter what the press has to say about it.

Olivia has gone on to be much more than just Sandy from Grease. She has released many albums, remained very close friends with her co-star John Travolta, acted in films, television movies and shows, had a residency in Las Vegas, and has hosted Dancing with the Stars this year. Now that her cancer has returned, she is probably going to take a break and focus on healing as best she can, with the world watching and hoping all along with her.

John Travolta had a crush on Olivia

Anyone who has seen Grease can tell that there was some pretty special magic happening between co-stars Olivia and John. “We both had a crush on each other,” Olivia said. “It created great chemistry.” The two were both single at the time that they shot the film, but while there were sparks flying, they never ended up acting on their feelings.

Olivia and John tried their hand at co-starring again

John and Olivia tried to recreate the amazing work they did together on Grease with the film Two of a Kind, in 1983. The film did have both of them in it but it was far from the success that Grease became. They do have a lot of fun working together and have collaborated on other projects as well, whether successful or not.

The Grease duo have a Christmas album together

Speaking of other collaborations, Olivia and John, both singers and actors, came out with a Christmas album in 2012. It had been a long time since they collaborated on Two of a Kind and they wanted to do something together. The album received moderate success and added to Olivia’s two other Christmas albums. One of the songs on the album is Take a Chance, which was featured in their film Two of a Kind.

They are still very good friends

For almost 40 years now, Olivia and John have been very good friends who have managed to remain as close as can be despite Hollywood being what it is. Now both in their 60s, Travolta and Newton-John speak often and meet for dinner with their significant others whenever they can. When Olivia was going through her initial bout with cancer, it was John who was there for her when things got tough.

Born in England, raised in Australia

Don’t let that accent fool you, Olivia may have been raised in Australia and call it home, but she was actually born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. Olivia was six years old when her parents moved with her and her brother and sister to Melbourne, Australia. The family moved for her father’s job, as he was offered the position of German professor and Master of Ormond College at the University of Melbourne.

Impressive family

Olivia’s grandfather, Max Born, was a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who played a vital role in the development of quantum mechanics (needless to say, a brilliant man!). Her father, Bryn, was an MI5 officer who was part of the team who worked on the Enigma project at Bletchley Park. He was an important piece of catching Rudolf Hess during World War II.

Grease is a musical romantic comedy film that came out in 1978 and changed the face of pop culture forever. Olivia was cast in the female lead as Sandy, while John Travolta landed the role of male lead as Danny. Olivia needed to dance, sing and act in this film and was a breakout success. This film was the one to change Olivia’s career from very good to excellent.

Recording artist

Prior to her role as Sandy, Olivia was a full fledged recording artist. Grease came out in 1978, while Olivia has been releasing albums since 1971. Her first album, If Not for You, came out in 1971, followed by Olivia in 1972, Let Me Be There, in 1973, Long Live Love, in 1974, and seven more albums before Grease was even released in theaters.

Marriage no. 1

Olivia was married to fellow actor Matt Lattanzi from 1984 to 1995. the couple had one child together, their daughter Chloe. Matt is ten years younger than Olivia, which back then was quite a conversation starter. They met on the set of the film Xanadu in 1979. While Olivia was incredibly famous thanks to her role in Grease, Matt was a relatively unknown backup dancer.

Marriage no. 2

Olivia was single for a very long time before remarrying for the second time to John Easterling. The couple married on a mountaintop in Peru in 2008 and remain happily married to this day. John is being very supportive in Olivia’s health issues and is good at being her date to events without feeling like he is being left out of less important (something every female celebrity always needs).

She almost didn’t take the role of Sandy

Now that it is behind us, we can talk about it! But there was a time there than Olivia wasn’t sure she wanted to accept the role of Sandy, as she thought she was too old to play the high school student (Olivia was actually 29 when she played the role of the 17-year-old). It was John Travolta who made her accept the role as he “was charming and really wanted me to do [the movie],” she said. “That was one of the deciding factors.”

First time seeing Grease

Olivia’s second husband, John Easterling, had never seen Grease before, according to Olivia. “John Travolta invited us for dinner because he wanted to meet my John. He has his plane parked on his own private runway, amazingly,” she recalled. “I told him that John had never seen Grease, so he said, ‘Well, why don’t we have dessert on the plane?’ My John had never seen it, so he got to see it with the two of us,” she continued. “It’s hilarious when I think about it. It sounds like a movie, but it really happened!”

Grammy Award-winning singer

Believe it or not but Olivia had earned three Grammy Awards by the age of 25! She was a well-known singer before her Grease days too. In addition to her Grammy Awards, she has also earned an American Music Award, and Country Music Association Award. Her Grammy wins were for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in Let Me Be There, and Video of the Year for Physical.

Television appearances

Olivia has played herself in more shows than she has played a fictional character. Her first time on television was in 1972 in The Case, a BBC2 special. She then appeared in the 1974 Eurovision competition. In 1982, Olivia was on Saturday Night Live as a host and guest in one of the skits, and has also been in made-for-tv movies, such as A Christmas Romance, The Wilde Girls, and A Mom for Christmas.

Judge on Dancing with the Stars

This year, Olivia acted as a guest judge on the reality competition show Dancing with the Stars. Olivia has a strong background in dancing, singing and acting all at the same time. On the episode that she was a guest judge on, the dances were all about iconic dances in music videos and movies, which Grease obviously falls under.

Las Vegas residency

Olivia has had a residency in Flamingo Las Vegas since April 2014. Her Las Vegas residency, just like it is for Celine Dion and Britney Spears, is a huge money maker and a fan favorite. She was supposed to start her residency in 2013 but had to postpone the opening date due to the untimely passing of her sister, Rona.

Her sister married her co-star

Olivia’s sister, Rona, married Olivia’s Grease co-star, Jeff Conaway. Jeff was known as one heck of a heartthrob back in the day. Rona and Jeff met through Olivia and fell head over heels for one another. They were married from 1980 to 1985. Jeff sadly passed away in 2011 at the young age of 60 due to pneumonia. In 2013, Rona also passed away at the age of 70 from a brain tumor.

She’s a passionate environmentalist

She planted 10 million tress in her native Australia as well as held a position as U.N. Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment. Olivia is also very good with anything green. She loves working on her own organic garden and growing her own produce and taking care of her chickens who produce eggs every morning which she picks and takes in to cook.

Net worth

Our darling Olivia is said to have a net worth of $40 million. Her net worth comes form her live album sales, Las Vegas residency, endorsement deals, appearances, and royalties. Her name is known around the world and is immediately linked to Grease. She has donated much of her fortune, like we mentioned, but her net worth is still quite impressive.

Olivia’s health issues

Olivia’s health battle initially began in 1992 with her first breast cancer diagnosis. Her father passed away the same weekend she was told she had cancer. She underwent a partial mastectomy, as well as breast reconstruction and chemotherapy to combat the disease. Her efforts were successful and she was in remission for over 20 years. Sadly, recent news have emerged about her health.

Returning breast cancer

As of May 2017, Olivia’s breast cancer has said to have returned and spread. Her team came out with a statement: “Olivia Newton-John is reluctantly postponing her June U.S. and Canadian concert tour dates. The back pain that initially caused her to postpone the first half of her concert tour, has turned out to be breast cancer that has metastasized to the sacrum.”

John Travolta’s reaction to her cancer

John heard the news of Olivia’s cancer returning and had the following comforting statement to make: “Olivia has always been an incredible human being and an inspiration to millions of people,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively in a statement. “If we all put our intentions for her to get through this—I know her so well—she will feel it, and it will support her. We love her and she loves us.”

She ownes a spa in Australia

Olivia opened the Gaia Retreat & Spa in Australia in 2005 in order to have a place where true relaxation and self preservation is a priority. Their site states, “Whether you are seeking total time-out or an improvement in general health, well-being or fitness – your bespoke Gaia journey is tailored especially for you. Gaia’s ethos and nurturing environment is a haven to develop, create and actualize whatever it is that you personally are seeking.”

Chloe Rose Lattanzi

Chloe Rose Lattanzi is Olivia Newton-John’s and Matt Lattanzi’s only child from their marriage. Now 31 years old, Chloe is now a busy singer and actress who lives in Los Angeles. She flaunts everything she can on her social media pages and calls herself a ‘Face of/media director’. She doesn’t look much like her mom, or her dad, but she has been known to have some work done.

Chloe’s concern for her mom

With the news that Olivia’s cancer has not only returned but has also spread, her daughter, Chloe, is inconsolable. This is by no means a death sentence for Olivia, but Chloe is distraught nonetheless. Chloe herself has battled both depression and anorexia, which can be seen on her photos online. Her small features are earned by limiting her food intake tremendously.

Chloe’s career

Chloe has been a part of film like Paradise Beach, Bette, The Wilde Girls, Dead 7, and Sharknado 5. She has released one studio album called No Pain, in 2016, and has three singles from 2010, 2011, and 2015. In addition to her singing and acting, she has become quite well know amongst the plastic surgery community and socialite circuit.

Years ago, Olivia opened up the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. She opened the facility after her own fight with breast cancer in the early 90s and the need for places such as these for women fighting the disease. She has donated much of her personal fortune to the foundation and is now, sadly, a patient at her own facility.

Olivia and Chloe’s relationship

Olivia and her daughter, Chloe, are very close. Most likely if you see a photo of Chloe on social media, it was her mother who snapped the photo. She even captioned one of her photos with: “Perfect day. So grateful to be alive. Photographer my mama. Us Newton Johns love photography,” Chloe captioned one photo, revealing that her mom was the one behind the lens. “Photographer: mommy @therealonj I adore you mom! [You’re] the best photographer.”

Chloe’s plastic surgeries

Chloe has spent a reported $415,000 on plastic surgery to look the way she does today. She has had a nose job, several breast augmentations, and Botox and fillers in her face. “Now I’m a 32DD (10DD), love my body and love showing my new boobs off. Mum supported my surgery decisions because she knew how unhappy I was before.” There were also those who said she had had a rib removed but she said that was an outright lie.

Olivia’s social media presence

Olivia is rather active on her Twitter page, where she posts updates about her health and other ventures she is on. She is also on Facebook, where fans can follow her page for all things Olivia. Her most recent use for her social media is to raise awareness for cancer research, especially considering this is a cause that is very near and dear to her heart.
