Cold remedies that really work

Having a cold is just one of the many joys that come with the shorter days and cold weather of winter. However, it doesn’t have to mark the end of the season. In fact, these cold remedies that really work just go to show that we can combat any illness Mother nature throws our way.

Chow down on soup

Believe it or not, but a bowl of chicken soup helping to combat a cold isn’t just a myth. It looks as though there could be many health benefits to chowing down on a bowl of the good stuff. As well as helping to reduce inflammation in the body, the nutrients can help alleviate symptoms as well as give our bodies the calories we need to fight off the illness.

Keep hydrated

One of the most important things to remember when trying to combat a cold is to keep yourself hydrated. Being sick can mean we lose a bunch of vital water. Sipping on water or juice throughout the day is one of the best ways to ensure we don’t end up dehydrated. However, it’s best to avoid drinks such as coffee or soda as these can have the opposite effect.

Stay propped up

While it might seem as though you want to sleep away your illness, our bodies sometimes have other ideas. Have you tried adding an extra pillow? The height will help to drain anything out of our sinuses (nice) while we sleep, as well as opening up our nasal passages meaning sleeping should become a lot easier.

Turn to salt water

No, we don’t recommend that you start downing salt water like it’s going out of fashion. Instead, it’s time to begin gargling the stuff. It’s best to warm the water and add a teaspoon or so of salt to the glass and mix it before gargling away. This will help to alleviate any signs of a sore throat in addition to ridding any of the virus that is lurking at the back of the throat. Just be sure to spit and not swallow.

Get steamy

In the shower, at least. Turning up the temperature of the shower and stepping in for a long soak under the water could do wonders for anyone that is suffering from a cold. The heat of the water should help to rid any muscular pain that comes with being sick, while the steam aids in clearing any congestion in our nasal passages. It’s a win-win situation.

Moisten the air

Just like the thought behind taking a hot shower, adding in a humidifier can help to clear out any symptoms of a cold. The higher level of moisture in the air will help to loosen any congestion, but it’s important to regularly change the water to keep things fresh.
