[post_page_title]Young Sherlock Holmes – John Lasseter’s 1985 masterpiece[/post_page_title]
With Robert Downey Jr.’s cinematic version and Benedict Cucumberpatch’s TV series, it seems like reimagining Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation has never been more in vogue. Back in 1985, however, it may have been a bit ahead of its time. Maybe that’s why Young Sherlock was such a flop. Putting teenaged Holmes in a boarding school, the movie’s mostly remembered today for featuring cinema’s first ever photorealistic computer-generated character.
The Glass Knight is only seen on-screen for about 30 seconds, but was a technological marvel that took the animation team headed by Pixar’s John Lasseter six months to create. Was it revolutionary? Absolutely. Does it hold up? Not even close. You could probably produce something better in 15 minutes.
