[post_page_title]Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within – Aki’s misadventures in space[/post_page_title]
Back in 2001, the ambitious Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within wanted to create photorealistic CGI depictions of humans. Keep in mind that this was the same year that Shrek came out. It took a team of 200 artists just over four years, but it was done. At the time, it was an astonishing achievement in visual filmmaking. The film’s protagonist, Aki Ross, was dubbed a “digital actress” by the studio.

There were even grand hopes of using her again in many subsequent projects. Heck, she had 60,000 hairs, with every single one of them being individually animated. Sadly, the movie flopped, hard, and the “photorealistic” CGI that cost $137 million back then looks like an average computer game cutscene today.
