We were first introduced to Ariel Winter as the adorable Alex in the hilarious mockumentary Modern Family. But not only has she grown up in front of our eyes, we’ve also come to learn of her troubled life at home.

In 2014, her sister Shanelle Workman was given permanent guardianship of Ariel, after she accused their mother of alleged physical and emotional abuse. Winter has since dedicated a Mother’s Day post to her sister. “I was lucky enough to have an unbelievable sister,” she wrote, “who raised me to be the woman I am today.”
