By the time he was brought back to shore, it was clear that Poling had lost his life out in the water. A state trooper and city officer did what they could to save him, but it was already too late. The men were naturally devastated by the loss, especially given that everything had been fine just a few hours earlier. What was even more upsetting was that the man who Poling had been chasing had made it to safety on the other side of the river.
