For something that ended up so ridiculously overblown, the conflict began surprisingly simply. In fact, the original note was only seven words long. “Please don’t pick my flowers,” Serena wrote in beautiful cursive handwriting. “Thank you.” Civil servant Andrew Wilson, who lives next door to her, had his theories on what prompted Serena to write it.

To hear him tell it, people often mistake the flowers for public property and just pick them or stamp on them. “I think it’s just idiots, or people coming from the pub,” he offered. He further suggested that there must have been a recent uptick in people picking the flowers, which evidently finally pushed Serena past her breaking point.
