It was precisely because the endeavor was so personal for her that seeing the green marker note upset her so much. She was “rigid with anger” at seeing it, and couldn’t figure out exactly what that particular note was trying to say.
Calling its author her “poison pen pal,” she wondered whether they were telling her to stop planting flowers because it was a private area or just to get off her high horse. Either way, she really wanted to reply with a note simply stating that she paid for those flowers.
