The film may have seemed to be set in Upstate New York, and it was indeed filmed in part at the famed Kutsher’s Hotel and Country Club in that state, but most of the film was actually shot in Virginia and North Carolina.
The location it was supposed to look like was the resort area in the Catskill Mountains called the Borscht Belt. The name came from the many Jewish families who would come every summer to the resorts in the area, and their supposed food of choice.
