Andrew Lloyd Webber and his team of producers had trouble getting funding for the original London production of Cats. They had to scrounge up investors in unusual ways, like putting out want ads in the local newspapers. Webber even had to take out a second mortgage on his home to pay for the show. It’s not surprising that nobody wanted to put up their money, especially since the Baron himself called his own show a “suicidally stupid musical.”
