[post_page_title]Sergeant Hartman | R. Lee Ermey[/post_page_title]
Sergeant Hartman – from Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 war film ‘Full Metal Jacket’ – is one of the most notorious bullies in film history. The perpetually angry, perpetually shouting sergeant sees it as his job to make the lives of his recruits as miserable as possible, in order to prepare them for the task ahead.
What this mostly does is leave the men he trains with a deep sense of enmity for him, and a somewhat poorly-adjusted attitude. Nonetheless, Hartman is one of the most iconic bullies ever seen on screen.

In real life, R. Lee Ermey was actually a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marines before he made his transition into acting. After appearing in ‘Full Metal Jacket’, Ermey found himself being cast in numerous roles in which he played a military figure or a tough-talking curmudgeon.
As well as appearing in films like ‘Mississippi Burning’ and ‘Se7en’, he also made appearances as Sarge, the leader of the toy soldiers in ‘Toy Story’, and Colonel Leslie “Hap” Hapablap in several episodes of ‘The Simpsons’. Ermey passed away in 2018.
