Michael was a friend and professional collaborator with Lionel Richie, so when he adopted little Nicole, he asked the pop singer to be one of her godparents. Michael agreed, naturally, and was Nicole’s godparent until his untimely death 2009. Many were surprised by Lionel’s choice of godfather, as Michael had been known as a sort of recluse (not to mention the later child abuse allegations against him); however, Michael was close to the Richie family from the start.
