In today’s day and age, we live in a world where technology reigns supreme. Computers have become a huge part of our lives, we carry tablets around in our bags, and our hands are constantly in our phones. Because of this, we have ditched handwriting for typing, and most of us can’t even remember the last time that we wrote something by hand. But is that really the way it should be? Writing by hand is more fulfilling than typing, and here’s why.

Writing by hand allows you to digest

If you’re in school or college, it’s always better to write notes by hand rather than type them on a laptop. Why? Well, writing by hand allows you to actually take in the information that you are hearing, and allow you to digest and remember it. When you are listening to a professor, your brain can easily type what they are saying without really thinking about it. However, writing by hand takes actual effort, and requires you to really look into what you are writing. This means your cognitive activity will be more active when you are handwriting – and that’s always a good thing.

Technology can be distracting

Although typing may seem like the easiest and the most simplest option, technology in general can have a devastating effect on our concentration. When you are writing on a piece of paper, you simply have the paper and your pen to contend with. When you are writing on a laptop, you may have pop-ups, you may have adverts, and you may even have social media notifications distracting you. This can ultimately hinder your learning, or cause you to make mistakes. Who wants that? Not us.

You can test your spelling

Laptops, computers, and phone all come with the ability to spell-check our work. This means that every mistake we make is automatically corrected. Sometimes, we don’t have to do anything to correct it. This has allowed us to form a culture that doesn’t care about spellings – because we always know they will be corrected. When you write with your hand, you get the chance to really check your spellings and make sure that you know everything you can about the English language. It’s like learning two things at once.

It can up your speed

Nowadays, people can type without even looking at the keyboard, and it seems as though it’s something they don’t even think about. But that’s exactly the problem. Although typing is fairly fast, the information is not going in, and it might not actually be as fast as writing by hand. In 2009, one particular study into typing and handwriting found that children who had to write essays were much quicker at writing them by hand. Not only that, but they also wrote more. Typing just does not give them the chance to do that.

If you’re the kind of person that types every single day, you might want to think about the last time you wrote something by hand. Ditch your laptop for the day and go back to basics!
