If you’ve ever gone through pregnancy the pregnancy process, you’ll know that it’s one of the most magical experiences you can ever go through. It’s amazing to feel your baby kicking and growing inside of you, and it’s something that many women dream of from a young age. However, there’s no doubt about the fact that growing a tiny human is also pretty tiring. Because of this, many expectant mothers spend the nine months of their pregnancy trying to be as comfortable as they possibly can.
They wear loose-fitting clothing, they remove layers to help them cool down, and they even mix up their style to befit their growing bodies. One mother thought there was nothing wrong with the fact that she adopted a comfortable pregnancy wardrobe, but she soon realized that there was a problem when she was refused service at a restaurant.
Staying cool and comfortable
Pregnancy is one of those things that offers both positive and negative experiences. On the one hand, you get to rest easy knowing that your body is growing a healthy and happy baby. On the other hand, you have to cope with the fact that your feet are going to swell, your stomach is going to become uncomfortably large, and you’re probably going to have some pretty strange cravings.
As if that wasn’t enough, you normally have to buy a whole new maternity wardrobe, as your growing stomach makes your everyday clothes seem smaller and smaller as the weeks go by. Because of this, most mothers try and find clothes that offer a bit more room, and one mother thought she had found the perfect outfit.
The woman in question
Of course, to truly understand this story, we need to know a little more about the woman in question. Charisha Gobin is 37-year-old who hails from Marysville, Washington. She rose to fame in 2017 when she was refused service in a restaurant while heavily pregnant with her fifth and sixth children.
The refusal and the response took the internet by storm, and it’s fair to say that people were divided on the restaurant’s decision. Was her outfit really unacceptable? Or was it just a misunderstanding? Well, the mother of four didn’t have any patience for the matter, especially because she was inching ever closer to her due date, and felt as though it was a complete injustice.
The incident took place in September 2017, when Charisha was seven-and-a-half months pregnant with twins. Although she already had four children at home, she was extremely excited to add twins to her brood – especially as she was expecting a boy and a girl. To take a break from home life and celebrate her impending arrivals, Charisha decided to go out for a meal with her mother and her sister.
To them, it was just another normal day, and they were just another set of customers making their way to the Buzz Inn Steakhouse. However, what happened next proved that it wasn’t another normal day, and they definitely weren’t being treated like any other set of customers – because they weren’t going to be served at all.
A large stomach
Because Charisha was in the later stage of her pregnancy, she was sporting a rather large stomach. Not only was she in her final trimester, but she was also expecting two children, which meant that her growing belly was even bigger than she had experienced with her other kids.
This made the mother extremely uncomfortable, and she struggled to find clothing that fit her, so she often had to improvise or wear things that gave her a bit more room to breathe. She thought that she looked stylish when she chose her outfit for the meal with her mother and sister, but most importantly, she felt comfortable.
Not an issue
Charisha didn’t even think about her appearance when she made her way into the Buzz Inn Steakhouse, because she didn’t think it would be an issue. She was a paying customer, so that was all that mattered, wasn’t it? In her eyes, she was just someone who wanted to fill up on some delicious food, and someone who would pay the bill at the end of the meal.
The expectant mother had no idea that she would be called out for her “inappropriate” attire, considering the only thing on show was her bare bump. She thought she had found the perfect outfit to suit her needs, but she soon realized that one particular server didn’t feel the same way.
Shocked and surprised
The expectant mother assumed that she would be enjoying a lovely meal with her mother and sister when she made her way into the steakhouse, but it wasn’t long before that dream was crushed right in front of her. She was shocked and surprised when one of the waitresses made her way over to the family and told them that they would not be able to eat in the establishment.
Charisha was told that her outfit violated the health code of the restaurant and that they would not be served if she didn’t cover herself up. Charisha was shocked and surprised, and couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
No shirt, no shoes
When Charisha and her family questioned the server, the waitress tried to explain herself. She noted that the Buzz Inn Steakhouse had a “no shirt, no shoes” policy and that the expectant mother was breaking the code with her crop top.
She was told that she wouldn’t be allowed in the restaurant or allowed to eat while she was wearing the shirt because it violated their safety standards and put the food and other customers at risk. The family were outraged and felt as though they could laugh at the words coming out of the server’s mouth.
Airing her grievances
Because she was wearing a shirt, Charisha didn’t know what to make of what the server was saying. She didn’t understand why she was being accused of not wearing a shirt, considering she was wearing one that just happened to be a bit shorter than normal to make room for her growing baby bump.
Charisha felt as though she was being treated unfairly, and ultimately decided to air her grievances on social media. Alongside a Facebook rant, Charisha also posted a photograph of her outfit to show her friends and followers what she was wearing when she was refused service.
Making it private
Since the incident happened, Charisha has made her Facebook profile private, so her post is no longer visible to the thousands of people that once shared it. Of course, she has also moved on from the situation and welcomed her twins into the world, but that hasn’t stopped the chatter surrounding her restaurant refusal.
Before she made her profile private, her refusal gained a huge amount of traction across Washington and the world as a whole. After all, everyone had their own opinions on the matter and wanted to have their say on whether they agreed with the server or Charisha.
Before too long, news stations and newspapers across the globe had picked up on Charisha’s situation, and they all weighed in on the server’s decision. Because they wanted to know more about the situation and Charisha’s take on the matter, they attempted to interview the mother of four and expectant mother of twins.
Thankfully, Charisha was more than willing to accept these interview requests and tell her side of the story. She wanted to explain herself further and go into detail about why she didn’t agree with the server’s decision.
During an interview with Kiro 7, Charisha noted that she felt as though she was being punished for being pregnant. We live in a world where people wear crop tops on a regular basis, and they are just a part of everyday society.
Because of this, she didn’t believe that a younger woman without a large pregnancy belly would have been treated in the same way or have been refused service if she was wearing a crop top. Charisha’s stomach was much larger than the norm, and stuck out much more. She believes she drew attention to it even more.
Not breaking any rules
Within her interviews, Charisha also stood by the notion that she wasn’t breaking any rules. Although she appreciated the fact that the restaurant followed a “no shirt, no rules” rule, she didn’t believe that she was breaking that rule in any way. She was wearing a shirt, and it even had sleeves.
Charisha didn’t even have any cleavage on show or wear anything inappropriate, so she just didn’t get it. All she had on show was her bump, which she was incredibly proud of because it was confirmation that her body was going through a beautiful process.
Driving across town
Charisha couldn’t believe that she was being shamed for her outfit of choice and for wearing a crop top that was comfortable over her stomach. She found the whole thing humiliating and embarrassing, and she couldn’t help but feel as though she was being shamed as she was herded out of the restaurant.
It was also incredibly inconvenient and stressful for the expectant mother, as she didn’t get to eat the meal she was so looking forward to. As a pregnant woman eating for three, she needed her sustenance and to keep up her energy levels.
The next restaurant
Although Charisha and her family did exit the restaurant when the server told them to, they weren’t going to give up on their quest for food. They decided to drive all the way across town to eat at the next restaurant, but they were hesitant to walk in. Would they be refused service again? Would the server once again tell them to leave?
Thankfully, they had no problems when they made their way into this next establishment, and nothing was said about the outfit that Charisha deemed to be perfectly fine. Throughout it all, the expectant mother remained comfortable and well-fed.
A flurry of comments
After her story made waves across the world, there was no doubt about the fact that it caused a stir. A flurry of comments inundated her now-private Facebook post, and even more people commented on the social media posts of news stations who decided to cover her story.
Everyone wanted to have their say on the matter, and it’s intriguing to see where people stand within the whole debate. While there are countless people who agree with Charisha and believe that she was treated unfairly at the Buzz Inn Steakhouse, there are many others who believe that the server made the right decision.
All about the circumstances
As people read about her story, they all wanted to say their bit, and some people also wanted to go into the details surrounding the event. They noted that when Charisha and her family were refused service at the restaurants, the temperatures in Marysville were soaring.
The temperatures had made their way into the 90s, and those who have gone through pregnancy confessed that being so heavily pregnant in the heat is extremely comfortable. They told Charisha to leave a no-star review on Google for the restaurant as they should be ashamed of themselves.
Doing the same
Alongside the messages of support and sympathy for Charisha, there were also many comments that called out the server and her actions. They wondered whether she had ever been pregnant with twins in such scorching heat, and wondered whether she had thought about the fact that the expectant mother would have been very uncomfortable.
While there are rules in place, rules can sometimes be bent in certain circumstances – especially as many people believe she was not breaking any rules in the first place!
Passing the blame
Many women who commented on Charisha’s situation also suggested that the server was passing the blame. They suggested that the expectant mother wasn’t really breaking any health codes because they have seen women wearing much less in restaurants and food establishments in the past.
One particular woman asked why some women can make their way into restaurants wearing bikinis, but they aren’t removed or told that they are breaking any health codes. Yet, Charisha was removed for wearing an outfit that covered almost all of her body, apart from her growing baby bump.
While a large portion of commentators agreed with Charisha’s side of the story, there were many who didn’t agree. They believed that the server was well within her rights to refuse her service, and have put across their own opinions on the matter.
One particular woman noted that when she makes her way to a restaurant, she doesn’t want to see anyone’s stomach. That doesn’t matter if it’s the stomach of a man, a woman, a pregnant woman, or a woman who isn’t pregnant. She noted that while you are in a public place, everyone should dress appropriately.
Just not okay
Another critic noted that the restaurant was not body shaming Charisha or treating her any differently to someone who wasn’t pregnant when she was refused service. They noted that anyone would be removed from a restaurant if they weren’t wearing a shirt that wasn’t covering their chest or their stomach, as that is not appropriate attire for a public eatery.
Because of this, they didn’t think that the server was in the wrong. They instead believe that they made the right decision, and was simply following the rules of society.
The restaurant’s response
As talk around the incident grew to fever pitch, the restaurant decided to have their say on the matter. They released a statement to the press and on their social media profiles that apologized for the incident.
They noted that the server had worked for the company for over 20 years, and was simply enacting a rule that they thought Charisha had broken. They said that they were sorry for the misunderstanding and that they would not follow the rule so strictly in the future, especially where guests’ comfort was called into question.
It seems as though Charisha has since moved on from the incident and is now enjoying her life with her new twins in tow. However, there’s a high chance that she hasn’t forgotten her experience at the Buzz Inn Steakhouse.
Her refusal was both embarrassing and frustrating, and she found herself becoming increasingly angry as the day went on. This became even more irritating when she went to the next restaurant and was served immediately. So, was Charisha in the right? Or was the server right to refuse her?
Through and through there is one thing that could be said about the waitress. She probably could have been a bit more understanding about the situation that Charisha was in.
Clearly the woman was upset by what was happening and instead of discussing it rationally, the waitress refused her service and asked her to leave. Considering Charisha was already uncomfortable being severely pregnant on such a hot day, the last thing she needed was to have this happen to her. That outfit was the only way she felt okay to go out.
Making a complaint
Something that may be going through peoples’ minds about everything that happened with Charisha is why was she asked to leave? Had someone complained? It’s possible that her exposed baby bump was making another customer uncomfortable and they spoke with the waitress.
Perhaps the waitress didn’t know what to do, so that’s why she first approached Charisha to inform her that she needed to cover up. There’s a possibility that she didn’t want to expose the complainer and that’s why she said that it was a health risk.
Talking to a manager
The whole story can beg the question of, who gave the waitress the authority to kick someone out of the restaurant? Had she spoken with a manager? Was she even able to make this decision on her own?
While the management of Buzzed Inn mentioned that she’d been a longtime employee, it may have been a hasty decision. Perhaps Charisha should have gotten a second opinion by at least another employee – if not a manger – before agreeing to leave. But, she was embarrassed and probably just didn’t want to make a scene.
At the end of the day, some people may feel that the waitress was reacting poorly to the situation. While yes, Charisha, was exposed, she wasn’t doing anything wrong. Many consider her refusal of service a bit of an overreaction.
Clearly people would have been fine with the pregnant woman eating there as she was able to be served just fine at the next place. After all, people go to restaurants to eat, not to stare at what other people are wearing.
While Charisha has thankfully moved on, there is one thing she probably still thinks about and that’s how she hopes she never has to experience something like this again.
If she does become pregnant again – regardless if it is with twins or not – there’s a good chance she may want to wear a similar outfit again. If it is warm and she is uncomfortably close to her due date, shouldn’t she be able to dress as she pleases?
