These impractical homemade inventions might just be genius

We’ve all probably sat at home, staring at the TV remote, dreaming up some sort of genius invention that would effectively draw the darn thing toward you. Or perhaps some kind of alarm system for when it’s fallen down the back of the couch and the only place you can think to look is under the TV cabinet. However, most of the time, these weird and wonderful ideas will get brushed off, either because we don’t have the materials or the real know-how to pull it off.

Well, for some people, there is no holding them back. Using a touch of genius – or is it madness? These people decided enough was enough, and that nothing would get between them and creating the next best household invention we couldn’t live without. Of course, they didn’t quite think every detail through, but perhaps it was worth it even if the only home it would be changing is their own. At least they tried.

Fire-bucket hot tub

If we could all own a hot tub, we probably would. Being able to get home from a long day at work and soak all the stress out in the hot, bubbly water… Bliss! The problem is, they’re super expensive, which is likely why most people don’t own one, and they’re considered a luxury.

Fire-bucket hot tub

Well, this person decided they couldn’t wait for that lottery win any longer, if they couldn’t buy one then they would make one out of garden materials. It certainly looks as if they have an idea on what they’re doing, they possibly just forgot about the risk of having so much fire burning right by a load of plastic. If anything does go dreadfully wrong, at least they have a pool of water right next to it.

Anyone have a spare straw?

Now, this has happened to the best of us. It seems to be an impossible task trying to prevent phone chargers, or any charger for that matter, from breaking. After a while, they will start to bend and break, before the internal wiring decides that it can no longer do the task. We’ll try to keep them going for as long as possible, finding that delicate positioning where it might work, even for a short while.

Anyone have a spare straw?

This invention has undoubtedly broken the mold, using a rubber band and a straw to protect and keep that sacred position which allows the electricity to flow from charger to device. As far as inventions go, while this might not be a kit sold in stores near you, it might very well work as a kind of hack.

All you need are rubber bands

almost everyone has a TV, games console, a sound system and so many other gadgets, there is nearly always a remote that goes with it. This then leads to the issue where almost no one is organized enough to keep them safe, losing one or the other. We’ve all had problems like having sound but no picture, or TV but no Xbox.

All you need are rubber bands

Then that might lead to the dreaded having to get off the couch to push the ‘on’ buttons. Well, fear no more, this person’s genius and some rubber bands have solved that issue forever. By tying them together, they create a mass so large, that you could never fit them under, behind or around the couch and the best part is, you never have to reach for a separate remote.

Hamsters can charge your phone now

If only every household had a pet hamster and this cheeky little device that seems to convert hamster energy into power. That’s pretty cool, especially when you’ve accidentally lost your last charger to the expanse that is your house. Or maybe someone else has desperately needed to borrow it and forgot to tell you?

Hamsters can charge your phone now

Either way, this solution bypasses any of the issues of needing a plug socket. Just get sweet little Ham-Ham going in his spinning wheel. We’re guessing the only drawback would be when the little guy runs out of energy and decides it’s time to fill those cheeks with glorious food. Oh well, perhaps it can be one of those emergency every-now-and-then solutions. So if you have one of these furry friends you know what you can do!

Cheap and effective

Of course, purchasing the super expensive iPad isn’t enough for the cashier to throw in a free case or stand, no. So, this person decided to take it into their own hands and improvise a more cost-effective option. With the help of a few huge pencils and some rubber bands, this person created the ultimate iPad stand. Most people might walk in believing it to be a work of art.

Cheap and effective

Perhaps a creation like this could fetch a good price for it purposeful and aesthetically-pleasing appeal? While they undoubtedly have an excellent mind for brilliant ideas, we hope their pioneering skills are up to scratch, and they don’t have a tragic accident to clear up if that pencil-stand were to collapse. While we haven’t been converted to pencils and rubber bands, we are impressed with this person’s creativity.

Spin that volume faster

The two things we all have lying around the home; a remote-controlled car, an old Hi-Fi, oh, and duct tape. A rather crude invention, but we can see where they were coming from. Perhaps they’ve had to get through the tragedy of losing the remote…

Spin that volume faster

And then had to find new ways to cope with that loss. So, this is the final result of someone’s inevitable frustration. Using a broken up remote controlled car, they have brilliantly used the wheel to pulley the volume to the right level. We just hope the other wheels don’t take off.

Taking multi-purpose to the next level

Either you’re looking for a disguised way to drink your favorite soft-drink at work, or just want to take comfort and practicality to the next level. Why carry an extra bottle in your bag when your tie can be your bottle instead?

Taking multi-purpose to the next level

You barely even need to use your hands thanks to the extra-convenient straw mechanism. Of course, if it ever leaked, then you’ve got an awkward clean-up and some explaining to do. While this is undoubtedly a great way of utilizing your personal space, we’ll be sticking to our boring water bottle.

Practically no difference

While most people might try and get this fixed ASAP, not even thinking of risking driving in the dark, this guy has another idea altogether. Maybe they had to get home and nowhere was open to get it fixed?

Practically no difference

Whatever the reason, they had a great idea to solve the problem temporarily. Using a flashlight instead of a headlight was certainly a creative solution, but they will need to have the headlight fixed ASAP as that is much safer and more secure than this temporary fix.

Sometimes advances don’t work

Earpods are one of those things you either love or you hate. For this guy, he obviously wasn’t too keen on the idea of losing his super-expensive earphones, deciding that he would like to keep them attached after all.

Sometimes advances don’t work

How did he do it? A hairband and some string, so when you buy those crazy modern music dispensers, and you’re not too sure on not having those reliable wires between them, then this is your best solution! Besides purchasing the real deal of course.

Accuracy for the win

In the words of Eminem, when you only have one shot, you cannot miss your chance; so this creative genius decided to maximize their chances at taking that crucial shot. The gaming industry is massive, not just with teenagers either, with people taking it so seriously as if their life depended upon it.

Accuracy for the win

It stands to reason then that you need only the best eyesight and aim to be the best and get the highest score. Back in the day we used to get closer to the screen, ruining our vision in the process. However, this guy thought outside the box, using a magnifying glass to highlight their sights and increase their chances.

Too hot? No problem

No need to waste your breath cooling your super hot food down anymore, this invention has you sorted. If you can keep this fantastic little fan balanced on your fork, spoon or chopstick, then you’re all set to go!

Too hot? No problem

Of course this seems a little excessive when a little bit of patience can solve the problem without the need for a creative and ingenious mechanism to do it for you. However, if you’re like this guy, and you can’t wait for your food – and we certainly won’t blame you – then this is the contraption for you!

Nothing can’t be solved

The many times people have made themselves that comforting hot drink that gets them through the day, and then forgotten it because they’re too tired or busy, is quite tragic. Especially in the moment that you realize that it’s gone below a reasonable drinking temperature.

Nothing can’t be solved

Well, fear not because this crazy-dangerous-looking invention can warm it up within minutes. Of course, we wouldn’t recommend it, and perhaps it would be better to make another cup rather than play around with the laws of conduction.

It could be worse

This looks pretty bad, but when you’re faced with a decision like this, it can be a tough one. Sometimes you don’t want to spend more money on a new remote, and with the right know-how genius, you won’t have to.

It could be worse

This person decided that their remote was still in working order; it just needed the right mixture of tin-foil and craziness to get the gadget in ‘nearly’ perfect working order. It’s one way to safeguard against other people changing the channel.

What a ‘cool’ idea

It’s no new thing to change an object’s function and then completely repurpose it for something different. Perhaps you have a cooler box lying around, and a messy pile of wires hanging out of the side of your home that needs tidying up; problem solved.

What a ‘cool’ idea

This person decided enough was enough and, throwing caution to the wind, created the almost-perfect solution to keeping their wires safe from the elements. It’s not every day you get a workable solution, but they did so without breaking the bank and by repurposing another item. Great!

That’s one way to do it

This person doesn’t want to spend a load of cash for a device that counts your steps and isn’t too fussed about size or convenience. We certainly wouldn’t want to wear that walking two steps… Let alone running a few miles.

That’s one way to do it

However, it’s pretty impressive that they could create such a device out of what they had available. It seems as if it’s still wired into something too, hopefully, they don’t have a hamster powering that thing because that would be even harder to use.

If only this existed

Now, this is ingenious, someone who loves relaxing in the bath obviously had enough of getting the corners of their book wet. Or worse, dropping it in entirely. In order to avoid future tragedy, this person put their creative-genius hat on.

If only this existed

Finally, they constructed this effective solution that will save bookworms all over the world! So, if you have a dog’s leash and a hook handy, this is what you need to do to read your books without a worry in the world.

Not simple, but effective

Rubber bands seem to be the world’s greatest invention for then making other inventions with. However, this one is more of a correction than anything. Gaming controllers can be incredibly expensive.

Not simple, but effective

So when they go wrong, it’s unlikely that most people have a spare buck to get a new one. This person used some incredible geometric-elastic-band genius to re-align his temperamental analog stick, fixing the issue and making it fit for purpose. The configuration doesn’t look particularly simple though.

If it works, it works

Sometimes accidents happen, and those poor wing mirrors on the sides of our cars tend to be right on the edge of danger all the time. While newer cars have a super-useful folding wing mirror mechanism, some older models don’t have this luxury when they’re parked.

If it works, it works

Of course, even with this modern day tech, some people accidentally break them completely. For this person, the solution was simple. Tape a mirror to the wing. Sorted! This might bide them a bit of time before they’ll inevitably need properly fixing.

Gloves or socks, who knows?

When winter is approaching, and you’ve lost your only pair of gloves, this might be a solution for you. Why purchase a brand new pair of gloves when a perfectly good pair of old socks will do the trick?

Gloves or socks, who knows?

This person clearly values their warmth and their wallet, so creative solutions in everyday-wear probably come naturally to them. Why didn’t we think of that? No one would ever know that these makeshift gloves used to be socks, it’s that good.

Cheeky stash

Some people don’t like to be obvious with their money or belongings, so discovering a way to be discreet can have some impressive solutions we would never have thought of. If you have an old flip phone, and you want discretion when it comes to your cash, then this is a perfect solution for you.

Cheeky stash

Apparently, all you need to do is scoop all the technology out of the keyboard and screen, and you’re ready to go! No-one would ever guess that the super old cell phone is really a cheeky money stash.

This broken clock

Clearly, the clock mechanism still works; it was just the fact that a large portion of the clock had broken off for some mysterious reason. Since the hands still ticked along, these guys had a great idea of just drawing the rest of the clock on a piece of paper and voila!

This broken clock

Problem solved. It actually looks relatively accurate too. Hopefully more chunks of the clock don’t fall off, or they might end up replacing the whole lot.

The obvious solution

If you’ve ever experienced the arm of your office chair falling off, then be not afraid, because that old landline phone you have lying around can finally come in handy. All you need to do is grab a reel of tape and stick the thing face down.

The obvious solution

Then your chair will be good as new. You might want to keep as many as you can though since landlines seem to be disappearing and replaced by cell phones. A cell phone just wouldn’t be as effective.

Balcony pool

We’ve all seen those extraordinary Instagram posts of people swimming on their luxury balconies, but if you don’t have buckets of cash to spend on those kinds of vacations, then this is the next best thing.

Balcony pool

All you need is some tarp and a hose, and you’re away. It might not be that much bigger than a bath, but it’ll do for that outside balcony swimming experience. We hope they have a lot of plants that need watering though, as that’s an awful lot of water to dispose of.

The remote solution

As you can see, remote controls are a problem for most people. This person’s solution was certainly in the realm of ‘simple but effective’ because all it seems to involve is fitting a yellow ribbon to the bottom of a sizeable length.

The remote solution

And letting that be a decent indicator as to where it may have fallen. They’ve even demonstrated how it works in action too. Possibly a solution many can practically consider, avoiding the terrible situation of finding the buttons on that pesky TV.

It’s still a seat

Stranger things have happened, from toddlers to untrained puppies, household items can be ruined in mysterious ways, and furniture is expensive. So, instead of having a useless seat or replacing the whole thing straight away, this is indeed one solution.

It’s still a seat

It doesn’t look as comfortable as the couch, but at least you won’t have to sit a million miles from everyone else while you’re watching your favorite program or movie. All in all, a creative solution to a problematic situation.
