The Royle Family – then and now

When you think about the world of family sitcom, the whole concept seems a little upside down. No, we’re not talking about the Byers family in Stranger Things, we’re talking about the fact that we all get a kick out of watching a television show about other families.

Most of the time, we settle down to watch these family sitcoms with our own families, and we leave our own world of being mothers, brothers, fathers, sisters or grandchildren to enter the world of a completely different family. Although this may seem pretty backward, the family sitcom genre is incredibly popular. Worldwide, family sitcoms such as The Simpsons, Full House, Modern Family, The Brady Bunch, The Jeffersons and All In The Family have all allowed us to enter the slightly dysfunctional houses of different families, and see how normal our own families are.

In fact, these shows actually make us appreciate the family members we have in our lives! The trend of the family sitcom has also made its way over to the UK, and the likes of My Family, Outnumbered, Mrs. Brown’s Boys and Birds of a Feather have all reigned supreme. However, there is one show that tops that list… of course, we’re talking about The Royle Family.

As the brainchild of the ITV network and created for the BBC network, The Royle Family was written by Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash, and debuted for the first time onto our screens in 1998. This show allowed us to follow the lives of the Royle family in Manchester, who lived the majority of their lives in their pants, sat in front of their television screen. The original series ran for three seasons until 2000, before it temporarily left our airways. However, the show returned from 2006 until 2012 with various TV specials that allowed hardcore fans the chance to see what The Royle’s were up to after they won over the hearts of the nation all those years ago.

Despite the fact that The Royle Family has now been retired from our airways, that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about it. The show is regularly remembered for its format and its humour and has placed highly within polls to find the best British sitcom. Yet, remembering The Royle Family would not be possible without remembering the cast of the show. After entertaining us for years on end, have you ever wondered what the cast of The Royle Family are up to now?
