What came first, the chicken or the egg? Eggs have been around since practically the dawn of time if you take into account the number of prehistoric creatures who laid eggs. In fact, it’s likely that the very first humans would have eaten eggs; although probably not in as many different forms as we do now. Chickens have been domestic, and their eggs have been eaten since before 7500 BCE. Around the world, different cultures would dig into their favorite bird eggs – from jungle fowl in Asia through to qual in Greece. Back in Egypt, before chicken eggs became popular, it wasn’t unusual to see people offering up ostrich and pelican eggs as offerings, too. In ancient Rome, eggs were a huge part of any meal time, and it was common to have a dedicated egg course at the beginning of a meal. Fast forward to today, and there is nothing quite as delicious as a poached egg on toast – with a bit of avocado for good measure! Most of the time, this goes without a hitch, although sometimes you do find a bit of pesky shell has made its way into your omelet.
