Spoiler alert: The content of this article is filled with spoilers and might ruin the endings and plot twists of these films if you have yet to watch them, so proceed with care.
Perhaps it’s the fact that they allow us to escape our everyday lives for a while, and not think about our own problems. Movies can give us a couple hours of sitting back and just enjoying what’s in front of us. We might also get sucked into a new world filled with interesting characters and adventures on every corner.
But another thing films do, is give us something to think about. Each movie has its own underlying messages, so while we’re watching a film, we may find ourselves thinking about life or considering all kinds of philosophies. If the film is really good, it makes us dig deep within ourselves to find answers to questions raised on the screen.
One of the best ways in which movies get our brains working, is by being unexpected. Sometimes there’s a major plot twist that changes the whole film, or a surprising end that makes us rethink everything we just saw. Nothing is better than finding out you’ve been outsmarted by what’s happening on the screen, because we as viewers want to be challenged.
Having a smart and unexpected plot twist can take a regular old movie and turn it into a masterpiece. Try to imagine some of your favorite movies without their surprising ends, and you’ll find they’ve turned almost boring! So if you’ve watched a movie’s ending and felt like you needed to rewatch it to understand what happened, or you were left blinking as the screen becomes black, it’s a job well done.
A good surprise ending changes the whole premise of the film and turns it into something entirely different. But these multi-layers are what truly make films worth watching, as it really piques the viewers’ curiosity. These surprise endings are also often talked about for years and years after.
People are still quoting that famous Darth Vader line from The Empire Strikes Back, and the twist in The Sixth Sense has been referenced in more TV shows and movies than we can count. When a movie truly makes an impression on its viewers, they will forever talk about that time when their jaws dropped at the movie theater.
