They say traveling is the only thing you can buy that actually makes you richer. Exploring new foreign and exotic places may eat up your money, but it truly feeds your soul. Perhaps the best part about traveling is taking photos to document the adventures and have memories so they will be able to last a lifetime. The only thing is that sometimes it proves difficult to get the perfect photo and sometimes people will go above and beyond just for this reason.
Whether they are hiking through the Amazon, strolling through European cities, or perusing outdoor markets in the Middle East, people are constantly snapping photos so they can never forget the feeling they are experiencing. Sometimes, however, they take things too far and ignore the risks involved with getting that perfect pic. Take this grandmother for instance. She disregarded signage warning her not to do something, and it was almost dangerous. Thankfully, she ended up okay and now it’s quite the hilarious story.
Iceland is quickly becoming a huge travelers’ destination and tourists from all over the world have been flocking there to see what the beautiful country has to offer. From the famous Blue Lagoon, to the colorful buildings that line the streets of the capital Reykjavik, to the glaciers that take over the icy waters, the island country really is breathtaking.
That’s probably why this family decided to take a trip there. Little did they know, grandma would be the star of their little Iceland vacation. She sure went through a lot while checking out some icebergs, but thankfully, her son was there to capture what happened next and he sent photos to his daughter.
Everyone says it’s Millennials and Generation Z who are the ones always on their phones and who spend too much time on social media. Whether that’s true or not, they certainly are not the only ones. In fact, because their parents and grandparents were not born into a world with such “luxuries”, they can become just as obsessed as the younger generations.
Sometimes it seems like everyone is a zombie to social media and we’re all glued to our devices. People are also fixated on sharing photos with others for ‘likes’. While memorable vacation photos are always nice, it’s never worth risking danger to get the perfect shot. Apparently, this grandmother didn’t think so, and hopefully she learned her lesson.
The iceberg incident
What happened to the grandma in question while on an Iceland vacation will be referred to as the iceberg incident from now on. While she was vacationing with her son on the Nordic island, grandma stumbled across an iceberg that resembled a throne. Of course, she couldn’t just let such a find pass her by without snapping a photo.
So, she took her place on the throne and posed for a pic. As her son began clicking away, she felt like a true queen, ready to lead her kingdom. Unfortunately, this simple picture on her iceberg throne did not end the way she expected it to, and things did not go according to plan.
Drifting away to sea
As the grandmother posed for her seemingly innocent picture, a wave came and splashed against her iceberg throne. Within seconds, she was dislodged, drifting away and heading out to sea. As she floated away, her son kept taking pictures to document the moment. He wanted to make sure he had proof of what actually happened.
He captured his mother’s iceberg incident perfectly, and even added hilarious captions to each photo so that he was able to actually tell a story when he sent everything to his daughter. The man mentioned how his mom had ascended the throne, but then lost her kingdom as she quickly made her way into the depths of the icy waters.
As the iceberg queen floated away, she eventually got so far out, she would never be able to make it back on her own. She was in need of some serious help. Thankfully, her son was not the only one who witnessed her slightly embarrassing incident.
There was someone nearby who saw everything, and he was a licensed boat captain and water rescuer – similar to the Coast Guard. It looked like the queen was going to need a formal rescue. The man stepped up to help and jumped to her rescue. He waded into the depths, snatched grandma off the iceberg, and supported her as he brought her back to shore.
As if by some stroke of luck, the iceberg queen was perfectly fine and her little experience did not put her in any real danger or harm. She considers herself lucky because things obviously could have turned out differently.
From freezing waters to sharp ice glaciers, this iceberg incident may not have had a happy ending if she hadn’t been rescued. In the end, at least her son had captured her moment on the throne before the tide dragged her away.
While the two people enjoying the Icelandic adventure were a mother and son, the son also has a daughter who was abroad at the time. The family is based in Texas, but 24-year-old Catherine Streng is an English teacher in South Korea.
Though her dad hates the cold, he agreed to accompany his mother to Iceland so they could take in the beauty. Perhaps his taking these photos and coming up with the story-like captions to send to his daughter was his vengeance for his mom dragging him along.
Posting to social media
Well, like the true millennial she is, Catherine couldn’t just let these hilarious pictures go unseen by others; she simply had to post them on social media. Streng shared her dad’s text messages on Twitter, and shortly after, they were going viral.
Since then, various outlets have picked up the story and shared it with the world, including Bored Panda and Buzfeed News. It looks like the iceberg queen has become quite the international celebrity and maybe she will end up expanding her kingdom to other lands.
People went crazy over the story and reacted with various comments that were almost as hilarious as the original captions. Everyone was laughing at the whole situation, but also saying they were glad the grandmother was okay.
They were all rather impressed with the man’s photography skills and creativity with the little story he came up with. In the end, they were also thankful someone was there to rescue her and the hilarious incident didn’t end badly.
Not very helpful
There were three common themes within the comments. The first one was that people couldn’t believe the father just sat there and took pictures instead of trying to help. While there probably wasn’t much he could’ve done to help, they noticed that he didn’t really try to do anything.
Instead, he just whipped out his phone and started snapping pics. Maybe he simply assumed she would make it out okay? Regardless, at least now there is photographical evidence that this happened.
The second most common comment was that the grandmother was Elsa in the future. For anyone who hasn’t seen the Disney movie Frozen, Elsa is the Snow Queen from a fantasy land who has mystical ice powers.
Those commenting on the story said the grandmother reminded them of the main character from the animated film, just the elderly version. As a teaser for the sequel to Frozen was recently released, someone also said that this could be part of the trailer for Frozen 3.
Another clever response to this story was that it all could have been from a sequel to the film Titanic. In this epic thriller, the iceberg that sunk the Titanic ship will finally get its revenge on Rose – the female lead – who just let Jack – the male lead – sink into the frozen depths of water.
Perhaps Jack’s spirit haunts the waters and that’s why the iceberg floated away to take the woman out to sea, like Rose did to him so many years ago.
Signs and warnings
There were actually signs with warnings at the site, alerting people not to do, well, exactly what Catherine’s grandmother did. Standing on the icebergs was supposed to be forbidden, and the signs said to be aware of freezing waters – along with unstable ice.
While people in the comments pointed this out, Catherine mentioned that her family was with a tour guide, so he must have ok’d it. Also, she said other people were able to take similar photos without incident, but something like this would happen only to her relatives.
Do it for the ‘gram
What happened to Catherine Streng’s grandma just goes to show how far people will go just to get the perfect picture. There’s a certain expression that goes “do it for the ‘gram” which basically explains what people will do in order to get nice Instagram photos.
Apparently, some will float out to sea. We have to wonder if this elderly woman posted her ice queen pic to social media. She seems like a cool hip grandma who would do have accounts across various platforms.
Learning a lesson
Everything may have turned out alright with this grandmother, but that doesn’t mean things couldn’t have ended differently. That being said, she probably learned a valuable lesson after almost being literally being lost at sea.
This time, she got a hilarious story with comical photos and someone was there to rescue her. Next time, there might not be. So, at the end of the day, it’s still pretty important to pay attention to surroundings and read warning signs while traveling.
Continuing the trip
A little iceberg scare wasn’t going to be enough to send Catherine’s grandma home. She and her son continued their trip as if nothing had happened. They simply weren’t going to let this ruin their time in Iceland.
Maybe their next vacation will be in the dense rainforests of Brazil and she will do something to remind everyone of George of the Jungle. Until then, long live the ice queen and may she stay away from the dangers of icebergs for a while.
