On September 6, 2018, the world stood in solidarity as they said goodbye to a legend of the screen. After breaking out into Tinseltown at the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Burt Reynolds was one of the last actors to have his name in lights during this era. With an impeccable acting talent and an infectious laugh under his belt, the passing of Burt Reynolds had a profound effect on his family, his friends, and his fans across the globe. Because of this, many of his former co-stars just had to pay their respects…
Burt and Dolly
Over the course of his career, Burt Reynolds worked alongside some of the biggest names in the business. It’s safe to say that he impacted their lives in more ways than one, and there is one woman who is especially thankful to have had him in her life. After meeting on the set of “The Best Little W****house in Texas,” Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds struck up an unlikely friendship that lasted for the rest of his life. The country star knew it would be tough, but she finally had to speak out about this friendship after his passing.
The life of Dolly
Today, Dolly Parton is still one of the most famous women in the world of show business. She is a singer, a songwriter, an actress, and a philanthropist, so it’s no secret that she has a hefty net worth under her belt. Her amazing career started in 1946 when she began to showcase her musical talent in the form of songs that she penned for some of the biggest names in country music at the time. After years in the background, she was finally able to crack the market on her own, and she released her first album in 1967.
A prolific songstress
Since breaking into the music market and making a name for herself, Dolly Parton has proved herself to be a prolific songstress. She wrote some of the most well-known songs of the 20th Century, and she has the privilege of claiming iconic hits such as “9 to 5,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You” as her own. As the 1980s drew to a close, Dolly found herself disappearing from the limelight – but she wasn’t going to let that happen. She decided to create her own record label and has since found herself back on top form.
All about the numbers
However, you don’t just need to take her success from us. The numbers surrounding this recording artist speak for themselves. Over the course of her impressive career, Dolly has won countless awards and accolades. Not only has she been able to bag herself 25 number one songs on the Billboard country music chart, but she has also released 41 top albums that have made their way into the top ten charts, and received an incredible nine Grammy Awards. As if that wasn’t enough, she has also found her way into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Dolly, the actress
It seems as though singing isn’t the only thing that Dolly Parton has mastered, because she has also won us all over as a Hollywood actress. At the height of her career, Dolly made her move into the world of acting and was soon chosen to take on roles in countless movies. The acting credits that sit on her resume today include Steel Magnolias, 9 to 5, Rhinestone, and Joyful Noise. After the success of these movies, she was later asked to take on a role in the 1982 movie, “The Best Little W****house in Texas.”
Stage to the screen
You might know “The Best Little W****house in Texas” as a Broadway musical, and that’s because the story was taken to the stage in 1978. As the movie director, Colin Higgins watched this musical gain traction; he decided to transform it into a movie that could be watched over and over again by fans at home. For this movie, he enlisted the help of Dolly Parton to take on the role of Mona Stangley. He also asked Burt Reynolds to come on board so that he could play Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd.
The movie was a box-office success, and critics couldn’t compliment the flick enough. They loved the production and the storyline, but they especially loved the two main characters. It was noted that the on-screen chemistry between Dolly and Burt was palpable, and it seems as though a lot of this was down to Dolly herself. Because she knew that fans would be watching the movie for the romance, she ensured that the film was chock-full of romantic scenes that would get hearts pumping.
Just good friends
Like many other actors who portray romantic couples on-screen, Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds were plagued with rumors as filming came to an end. Many suspected that they had taken their on-screen chemistry off the screen and embroiled themselves in a secretive affair. Nevertheless, Dolly was quick to squash these rumors and noted that they were just friends and nothing more. She noted that if Burt were ever to get married, she would “want to be friends with his wife” without them wondering if they were once an item.
Down the aisle
Dolly finally had the chance to become friends with Burt’s second wife in 1988, when he finally found a woman to walk down the aisle with. That year, he married the famous actress, Loni Anderson, and they quickly made the moves to expand their family and adopt their son. Although their marriage seemed to be a perfect Hollywood pairing, it came to a dramatic end in 1993 when it was revealed that Burt Reynolds had been having an affair behind Loni’s back. They later embarked on one of the most lengthy divorce battles known to Hollywood.
Although his marriage had been torn in two, Burt still had the fond memories of working with one of the greatest singers and actresses of all time to keep him going through such a difficult time. Up until his sad passing, he had only good things to say about Dolly Parton. He noted that he enjoyed every second of their time together and that he felt privileged to be able to share a set with such an incredible woman. During an interview in 2015, he confirmed that working was Dolly was “wonderful.”
Like father, like son
However, it seems as though Burt Reynolds wasn’t the only one to be a little smitten by the country music star during this time. While speaking with Reader’s Digest magazine, Burt recalled a day on the set of “The Best Little W****house in Texas” when his parents came to watch him in action. His father was incredibly excited to see Dolly Parton in the flesh, and he was even more excited when Dolly started to flirt with him. In Burt’s eyes, it made his father “very happy!”
Not always rosy
Both Dolly and Burt have noted that their time working together on the movie was an incredible experience, but it seems as though it wasn’t always rosy for the actors. Because they were working from a hugely popular Broadway play, there was a lot of pressure to ensure that the movie was a success. During this time, Dolly was also feeling under the weather, and she didn’t feel as though she had put in her best performance. Burt helped her get through the tough times.
Losing his rag
During an interview with People Magazine, Dolly also confessed that she and her “The Best Little W****house in Texas” co-stars often found themselves getting angry while on set. They would often feel frustrated by the pressure of it all, and they would let out their irritations in angry rants that would create shockwaves among the cast and crew. It’s believed that this frustration also came from the fact that Burt was suffering from heartbreak after his relationship came to an end with Sally Field. Tensions rose, but they got through it.
A great laugh
Sadly, the world lost a legend in 2018, and the news that Burt Reynolds had passed away shocked fans across the world. After suffering a fatal heart attack at just 82 years old, he is survived by his adopted son and his ex-wife, Loni Anderson. Although they were no longer together, Loni was quick to release a statement after his passing. She confirmed that she and her son would miss having Burt’s “great laugh” around them and that they would be organizing a private burial for the famous actor.
Burt and Sally
As people across the globe processed the news that Burt had passed away, actors and actresses who had worked with Burt in the past released glowing tributes to their dear friend and co-star. Most notably, his former partner and Smokey and the Bandit co-star, Sally Field, confessed that her heart had been broken by the news. She noted that she would never forget the years that she spent with the actor and that he “will be in my history and my heart” for the rest of her life.
Yet, Sally wasn’t the only one who wanted to shed some light on Burt’s legacy. Just a few days after his passing, major names in the world of show business had released heartwarming tributes to the actor and praised his work and career. Arnold Schwarzenegger called him a “trailblazer,” Ryan Reynolds hilariously parodied his most famous photoshoot, and Stephen Colbert made sure that the world knew he was the “number one star of the ‘70s.” It was immediately clear that he had a huge impact on the world through his movies and his personality as a whole.
Having her say
After working together on such an iconic movie, fans were eager to see what Dolly Parton would say about her co-stars passing. It seems as though she was immediately shocked and stunned to hear the news, but she soon broke her radio silence to post this photograph of the pair of them on the set of their movie. She confessed how sad she was to hear that Burt had sadly lost his life, and she also noted that the world would be mourning “one of our favorite leading men.”
Rest in peace
However, Dolly wasn’t over just yet. She had so much more to say about her co-star and her friend, but she just didn’t know where to start. In her heartwarming tribute, she hinted towards his iconic laugh, his quirky personality, his caring nature, and she stated that Burt would always be her “favorite sheriff.” She ended her eulogy with a few parting words that solidified their time on the set of the movie they filmed together. She finished with, “I will always love you, Dolly.”
Dolly was naturally shocked and saddened by the news that her friend had passed away, but she knew that Burt would not want his love ones to sit around and mourn while there was still magic to be made. Because of this, she has made it her mission to continue writing songs and making music – and that’s exactly what she has done. In fact, Dolly has recently teamed up with Netflix to create her own show based around her career and her songs that have had a huge impact on the world.
Yet, this isn’t the only project that Dolly has worked on with the streaming giant since Burt’s passing. She has recently teamed up with the whizzes at Netflix as well as her musical friends to write and produce six new songs as part of a brand new soundtrack. This soundtrack will stand alongside a brand new television show by the name of Dumplin’. For this project, Dolly worked with her god-daughter and fellow country music star, Miley Cyrus. She also worked with Elle King and Sia, and fans can’t wait to see the show.
