Not only is it important to drive carefully for the sake of safety, but you also never known what you might miss if you drive too quickly. That’s a lesson that one couple in particular learned when they saw a police officer standing in the middle of a road just outside of Greenbelt, Maryland on a very stormy day.
As the Hammetts were driving they were completely perplexed why this officer would choose to be standing outside, in the middle of a dangerous road, and in the pouring rain no less. It seemed so strange to them. And not only was this officer standing in the rain, but she was also smiling!
On a rainy day like this one there are many conclusions that someone could jump to. For example, perhaps the officer was warning drivers away from flooded roads, or perhaps a bad car accident was just up ahead and she had to divert traffic. Afterall, if a road is flooded it can be incredibly dangerous for cars to approach it. But this officer had another mission to complete when she stepped out on this particular road. Officer Sharnise Hawkins-Graham took her oath to protect and serve seriously, and she planned to follow through no matter who was in need.
Once the Hammett family realized just who and what this kind hearted officer was protecting, they couldn’t help but be inspired to lend a hand themselves. It didn’t take long for the couple themselves to jump out of their car and spring into action. And thanks to the heroic efforts of Officer Hawkins-Graham, and the Hammett family, this is a story that had a very happy ending.
In a day and age where so many stories in the news don’t have happy endings, or can feel so negative, hearing a story like this can be exactly what you need to lift your spirits. Not only have people been inspired by the brave act of Officer Hawkins-Graham, but this story also offers an important perspective that has resonated with many people. The moral of the story being that even the smallest things deserve protection and help. Luckily that is a sentiment that seemed to be shared by the Hametts and this smiling police officer, and it is because of those sentiments that a life was saved.
