The cast of One Day at a Time in real life

Back in the ’70s, it was only just becoming acceptable to show married people on television sleeping in the same bed. But along came a show that brought controversy into our living rooms all over the U.S. One Day at a Time was created by husband and wife power couple Allan Mannings and Whitney Blake, and it was based on Blake’s life experiences. And the couple wasn’t afraid to talk about issues that were still considered to be taboos in American television.

One Day at a Time is about the life of a single mother named Ann Romano, who is recently divorced and raising two teenage daughters in Indianapolis. While Ann was going through difficulties that many people were facing in their real lives, the subject was hardly a usual one for television at that time. No other show before it had revolved mainly around divorce and its ramifications on a family.

While in the ’50s, getting a divorce was a big deal and somewhat of a taboo, with less than 20% of couples opting to divorce one another. But when the ’70s came along that percentage already climbed to about 50% of all married couples in America. The subject of divorce is no doubt a sensitive one, since it’s a difficult thing to go through, but Americans seemed to think that the show was a refreshing change to what they were used to watching on television, since it touched matters close to people’s hearts.

The show aired for nine seasons between the years 1975 and 1984, and was constantly receiving high ratings and ranked between the top twenty TV programs. These days, the series is once again in the spotlight, as a remake of the show was created by Netflix in 2017, and has already aired for two seasons.

Keeping up with the pioneering spirit of the original show, the 2017 version manages to keep touching relevant subjects in society, as it focuses on a Cuban-American family this time around. The mother and head of the family also suffers from PTSD due to her service in the U.S. military. Not many shows today revolve around mental issues, especially PTSD.

The revival was received with high praisals by fans and critics, even receiving a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. But aside from reviving the show successfully, it also made us feel nostalgic towards the original series, and wonder what the cast of the show is upto nowadays, over three decades after the show’s demise.

The main cast of One Day at a Time consisted of three exceptional actresses who played the mother and daughters of the family. But besides these talented trio, the show also had many other wonderful actors and guest stars, who continued onto doing many great things after appearing on the show.
